So others may see...

The morning commute...

While driving to the church this morning, I came through several areas of VERY thick fog. And of course...my headlights were on. It's what you're supposed to do. That's how granddad did it. That's how dad did it. That's how I do it. That's how it's SUPPOSED to be done. So, naturally, as I passed by cars WITHOUT any headlights on...I began to murmur.
"They really should turn their headlights on." *grumble grumble*
I could hear them in their cars (in my head), driving along, all smiles, saying to themselves, "WOW! Even though the fog is thick as pea soup this morning, me, myself, and I can see JUST FINE.
No need to turn those headlights on today!"
*scoff* How silly, right?!
Well, maybe THEY can see just fine, and think it's fine to decide not to shine their lights. However, them shining their lights has nothing to do with how well THEY can see through the fog, but rather it has everything to do with how well OTHERS can see them while driving past them, or behind them on the road. Something to think about...

Lighting for yourself...

Some may be tempted to think the way that the other drives with their lights out were thinking. "If I can see just fine, why should I turn my lights on?" It's not a crazy questions. We know that the Bible does tell us that the light of God's Word lights OUR feet, and OUR path, which is true!

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105

It might be easy to read that verse, and think that as long as WE can see where we are walking, that is the end all purpose of the light. But that is true of the light that is God's Word. It IS intended to be OUR light for OUR feet and OUR path. But then Jesus goes on to say that WE also are the light.

Light for others...

“You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket,
but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others,
so that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

Our place in life is not simply to enjoy the Light that Jesus is, and gives to us, but also to BE that light. Without Jesus Christ, people are lost in darkness, and without hope. For us who have Jesus Christ, we are called to be the candle on the stand, giving light to all. We are called to let the light of Christ shine in us and through us so that others may see His goodness and grace.

Like a moth to the flame, we can pray that as they see us live the grace we have in Christ they will be drawn to Him, and we might have the opportunity to share the good news of His gospel with them.

Let your light shine. Be the light you were meant to be. Live for Him every day!
